JAPAN: AICHI EXPO
THE FUTURECAST SYSTEM

FutureSystem

One aspect of the Mitsui-Toshiba Pavilion that has become a focus of attention is the Futurecast System, a world-first in entertainment.

Every person who enters the theater gets a high-resolution digital full-face scan that is edited into the "film" in real time, so that everyone gets a role in the movie. A Toshiba supercomputer inserts the necessary information and presents the one-time-only film.

Go to the cinema and star in the film you're about to see

May 24th update from a Wheii.com reader:
"Everyone gets edited into film? I think not. Groups of twenty (20) are admitted at a time and all are scanned it is true but, there are only eleven (11) characters in the movie. This should be pointed out to those waiting in line. Luckily I didn't wait long to find out."

SPIT
SPAM OVER INTERNET TELEPHONY

Today the most common criminal use of phone lines is caller-ID spoofing. Wire-transfer services like Western Union require customers to call from their home phone when they want to transfer money in an effort to deter fraud, but this barrier is easily sidestepped by any identity thief using a caller-ID spoofing service, or by manipulating a Free World VoIP Dialup service to spoof calls.

In the United States, Caller ID spoofing is not prohibited by law. Telemarketers might start using VOIP to blast huge numbers of voice messages to consumers, a technique known as SPIT, for "spam over Internet telephony."

New ways to verify online identities are required:

THE EMPLOYEE BLOG

"Markets are conversations," announced the famous New Economy screed The Cluetrain Manifesto, published in 2000. The manifestos theme is that the Internet allows many more such conversations but that they are only valuable if they are conducted in an authentic human voice. "In just a few more years," the manifesto warns, "the current homogenized voice of business, the sound of mission statements and brochures, will seem as contrived and artificial as the language of the 18th-century French court."

Open conversation is happening largely through weblogs. The latest form of blogs is the employee blog, maintained on company servers and in its best form open to the public. As Jonathan Schwartz (Suns president and chief operating officer) puts it, "Any company that feels threatened by blogs probably feels threatened by the Internet."

SAMSUNG SCH-V770
THE 7Mp CAMERA PHONE

Samsung Electronics, Asia's most valuable technology company with a market value of $81 billion, aims to sell 100 million mobile phones in 2005, up 16 percent from the 86 million phones sold in 2004. Last year Samsung was first with a 5Mp camera phone and was also the first to put on sale a handset with integrated hard-disk drive and a phone that can receive satellite radio and television broadcasts.

Last week, Samsung unveiled the world's first mobile phone with a powerful 7-megapixel camera. The SCH-V770 offers photography functions typically found on digital still cameras, such as manual focus, user-controllable focal length, shutter speed and shutter priority, aperture priority and fully manual shooting modes. Users can also clip a wide-angle converter and tele-converter to the front of the lens. The display offers 320x240 pixel resolution. Other features include an MP3 player, video capture mode and business card reader. The phone measures 127x52x27mm and weighs 180g.

This phone is definately a threat to top digital camera makers such as Japan's Canon and Sony.

TIME TO REMEMBER

Five years ago the Nasdaq closed at 5,048.62

March 10, 1995, the Nasdaq traded below 800
March 10, 2000, the Nasdaq had an intraday high of 5132.52
March 10, 2005, the Nasdaq is currently trading at 2059.72

The Nasdaq's climb from 3,000 to 5,000 had taken just a little more than four months. But as of March 2000, the Nasdaq proceeded to fall 77.9 percent to its post-bubble low of 1,114.11 on Oct. 9, 2002.

Have we learned to focus on business fundamentals such as revenue growth and profitability? Probably not, because there are events that occur that do change mind-sets. Just think about Google, where shares are currently trading at $180, more than double their $85 IPO price.
